I spent much more time especially a reader taking on these books by choice not by the madate of a professsor. For Ovid, you might want to take a look at the Melville translation. I have the Penguin Deluxe C.Eds. In particular, there is a lot to say about Robert Fagles' stark translation which we will be reading. Similar, in Fagles' version, we get the added sense that such wonderful grammatical surprise would be too complicated, too oblique (though to do him credit, Fagles does include this "but" in the opening of his Iliad). I will be talking a lot about translations of the classics in the coming months, as I will be teaching the Odyssey when the semester begins. Of both The Illiad & The Odyssey, and they outshine (in readability and interest) any other edition I've seen. I might even be tempted to read the Fagles translation of The Iliad. I'm not sure if it's the fact that it's 15 years later, or that Robert Fagles is da man when it comes to translating, but reading The Odyssey is (dare I say it?) . I absolutely always go for an R. Fagles is best known for his masterful translations of Homer's epics the Iliad and the Odyssey. There are many translations of all these poems and quite a few of them are good; I like Robert Fitzgerald's translations of the Iliad, Odyssey and Aeneid. Fagles translation, whenever I can find it. I did manage to get through a few pages of the introduction to the Fagles translation of the Odyssey though. Robert Fagles' translation of “The Aeneid” is a worthy successor to his excellent translations of “The Iliad” and “The Odyssey.” Most of what I could say about these three works has been said many, many times. Professor, poet, and academic Robert Fagles passed on Wednesday, March 29th, from prostate cancer. My suggestion would be to read the Fagles translations first and then go back and read other translations, including Fitzgerald's later on. For those who haven't been keeping score, the late Robert Fagles's translations of Homer's Iliad and Odyssey have been the most popular editions of both since they were published in the 1990s.
